Liverpool 1 - 0 Sunderland

Liverpool v Sunderland
Magnificent free-kick from Alonso Sinks Sunderland

A brilliant first half free-kick from Xabi Alonso was enough to give Liverpool the 3 points much needed for their first home game at Anfield against Sunderland. Alonso's free-kick came in the 24th minute, after Zenden was brought down by Sunderland.

Liverpool v Sunderland
Calf Injury Troubles Steven Gerrard

Benitez made one change to the starting line-up since last week away game against Boro. Cisse started for the side, replacing Luis Garcia. It was a must win for Liverpool, we dropped 2 points last week at Riverside Stadium & we must grab all 3 points at Anfield.

Liverpool created many chances & Cisse missed the majority of those. Zenden sent in a perfect cross in the 18th min that needed only a tap from Cisse, was misplaced. Gerrard was forced to go off the pitch in the second half, due to a calf injury. Sunderland had Welsh sent off in the 75th min & were made to battle it out with Pool with 10 men. We created a couple more chances after we brought on Riise, but the scoreline of 1 - 0 remained till the final whistle.

Overall, not an easy win we would have expected from Pool. But, we did win & got the 3 points; that's what mattered. Sissoko & Warnock was again impressive. Bad news though, Gerrard gonna miss the return leg at Anfield against CSKA Sofia.
